Meeting with the occasion of the International Translator’s Day

It has already become a tradition to mark on September 30 the International Translators' Day.
On Saturday, September 28, the Association of Professional Translators of Moldova (ATP Moldova) in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, the Embassy of Italy in the Republic of Moldova and the Lawyer Office "DIGORE EDUARD" carried out a social event, aimed to draw the society’s attention to the translator/interpreter profession and to raise awareness to the contribution of translations to the society cultural life.

The event was held in a less common way: at the initiative of Mrs. Alina Abramovici, an Italian language translator/interpreter and a member of the ATP Board, the first part of the event was dedicated to translators working with the Italian language, while the second part - with a more general orientation – was addressed to multi-profile translators.

Translators of the Italian language, also at the initiative of Mrs. Abramovici, brought books in Italian, which were later offered as a gift to students present at the event.

Mrs  Eleonora Rusnac - President of ATP Moldova and also a well-known translator and interpreter with significant experience in translations for high-ranking officials and international organizations,  made an opening speech. To highlight the role and place of the translator in a globalized world Mrs. Rusnac also briefly described the evolution of the translator profession in our republic.

Further on the event, as mentioned above, was carried out in Italian, thus translators of Italian language, as well as students learning this language, had the special pleasure to meet Her Excellency, Mrs.  Biagiotti Valeria, Italy's Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, who welcomed the initiative of the organizers to hold such social events and emphasized the important role of translator in high-level official meetings. Her Excellency also referred to the need to observe confidentiality in translations and emphasized the obligation of a translator/interpreter to respect the confidentiality of the information whenever the situation/context requires that.

Mrs. Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Justice, mentioned that the authorized translator/interpreter, while providing services to the law enforcement bodies, becomes an important link in the justice-making process and also a guarantor of the observation of rights of the participants to the trial. In this case, the translator acts as a bridge via which communication between involved parties is carried out. Additionally, she mentioned that the translation implies an increased degree of responsibility, given that translation errors can have significant negative consequences.

Mister Eduard Digore, a lawyer and a good friend of the ATP Moldova, welcomed the initiative of the organizers to hold such events and urged translators to actively advocate their rights as professionals and to be united. Only through association is it possible to achieve success in the translations sector area – said the lawyer. Mr Digore also made a number of practical recommendations and useful advice for translators/interpreters working in the justice-making sector and, similar to other speakers, reiterated the importance of a correct translation of the message and of the observance of confidentiality.
